The reason I like the UP more than lower Michigan during the winter is the snow. Lower Michigan (especially the Ann Arbor and Detroit area) only gets enough snow to play in a few times each winter. The snow rarely stays on the ground after a snow storm for more than a week or two.
One of my fond UP memories of the snow from childhood happened in 1980 (or 1979). There was enough snow that year to make a sled ramp that reached the edge of the roof of my families house. My siblings and I were then able to sled from the top of the roof down the roof onto the ramp and down the hill in our backyard.

Re: Snow stories
Mon, October 31, 2005 - 7:21 AMi remember as a SMALL child when i would visit with my family there were often times that i would be up to my neck in snow if i tried to walk through it. my parents would have to carry me. my aunt had a very long sloping hill in her back yard that we would sled down. great fun! the snow combined with the hills in that area always made for some fun sled experiences! though i doubt the cars liked it much when we would sled right out into the street!!! -

Re: Snow stories
Mon, October 31, 2005 - 8:00 AMI had an experience with deep snow when I a kid (maybe 10 years old) that gave me nightmares. I was trying to escape my from my brother (I don't remember why) and I jumped off the road into a ditch with fluffy snow. The snow was deep enough that I actually became buried up to my neck, and the fluffiness of the snow made it like quicksand. I made it out by myself but the feeling of being buried and sinking stuck with me. -

Re: Snow stories
Mon, October 31, 2005 - 10:36 AMEEK!! Sounds scary! I heard of this happening to a not-so-agile kitty who fell off of a deck railing (second story) and became buried in the snow. It's human had to actually dig it out of the snow. Poor kitty!

Re: Snow stories
Mon, October 31, 2005 - 10:38 AMI agree--winters in the U.P. are better than in the Ann Arbor area where there is really not enough snow to do anything fun with. I think that if it's going to be cold, there should at least be some snow!
