Although I suspect tribe to be mostly filled with abandoned profiles, I thought I saw something new on this Yoopers tribe. It was a review, and low and behold, for something just down the street from me. Turns it out it has nothing to do with Yoopers and was just someone advertising their Tantra sex workshop on our tribe. Actually, it was a review of it by Chris.

I don't see or hear of many Yoopers out here, but I did have a sighting. I was headed east on Sunset Blvd. and was waiting at Vine for traffic to pass. An old BMW 3 series turns passed me and for some reason I looked in my mirror as it passed and on the bumper I saw the mark, a green "say ya to da UP eh" bumper sticker. We're out here. Maybe not in numbers, nor taking this place by store, but we're here.

The quiet solitude of the UP would seem to be a great place to foster poets and their poetry. One of my favorite poems that I feel like I have experienced myself is Robert Frost's poem "Stopping By the Woods On a Snowy Evening":

Whose woods these are I think I know
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

This poem makes me think of times when I was skiing by myself in the woods, and I would stop for a moment to just be in the here and now.

The reason I like the UP more than lower Michigan during the winter is the snow. Lower Michigan (especially the Ann Arbor and Detroit area) only gets enough snow to play in a few times each winter. The snow rarely stays on the ground after a snow storm for more than a week or two.
One of my fond UP memories of the snow from childhood happened in 1980 (or 1979). There was enough snow that year to make a sled ramp that reached the edge of the roof of my families house. My siblings and I were then able to sled from the top of the roof down the roof onto the ramp and down the hill in our backyard.

I do find the Yooper culture interesting though.
